Byron Bay Treating IBS
Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a functional digestive condition that can involve symptoms such as gas, bloating, cramping, abdominal discomfort, constipation, or diarrhoea. For some people, these symptoms are also connected with stress and emotional factors.
Dr. R.J. Singer (Chinese Medicine) has a special interest in working with clients experiencing IBS, drawing in part on his own lived experience with digestive challenges. Over more than 15 years of practice, he has worked with many clients presenting with similar concerns.
Each consultation provides individualised care, considering both underlying patterns and current symptoms. Approaches may include Chinese herbal medicine, acupuncture, and kinesiology, which can also be used alongside other forms of care where appropriate.
If digestive discomfort is affecting your quality of life, call us on (02) 6687 1276 or use our online booking form to book a consultation and discover how personalised care may help you.

Our Holistic Approach to IBS
Acupuncture has been studied for its potential influence on the parasympathetic nervous system, which promotes relaxation, rest, and digestion. People with IBS tend to have increased activity of the sympathetic nervous system, responsible for the “fight or flight” response. Some people report symptoms such as bloating, abdominal pain, bowel motility and stool consistency. Research suggests that certain acupuncture points, such as Zu San Li (St 36), may influence vagus nerve activity, which plays a role in digestive regulation and stress response.
Chinese Herbal Medicine is made up of mostly plant material and some minerals. Formulas may be tailored to individual constitutions and needs. Chinese herbal medicines have traditionally been used to support digestion, balance, and overall well-being. All of which improve bowel movement, reduce bloating, and can aid in stabilising moods. Chinese Herbal Medicine may be used on its own or alongside conventional or complementary approaches.
What causes Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)?
The exact cause of IBS is not fully understood. It is believed to involve a combination of factors such as gut sensitivity, changes in intestinal muscle activity, alterations in the gut microbiome, and the brain–gut connection. Stress, hormonal fluctuations, certain foods, and infections may also play a role in triggering or contributing to symptoms.
Can Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture be combined with conventional treatment for IBS?
Yes, Traditional Chinese Medicine, including acupuncture, can be used alongside conventional treatments for Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) to help manage symptoms. Always inform the practitioner of any existing medical treatments and drug prescriptions to ensure unintended interactions.
